Survey
In order to discover the target audience of our final idea for the newspaper we created a survey which asked various questions to determine the audience for our newspaper. We asked ten people who were all from different age groups and we got a range of answers and information.
Results from target audience survey
From these results we have distinguished that the target audience will form upon a variety of age ranges through from under 18 to over 60 – therefore the news content will have to engage all ranges of the audience. Half of the people surveyed read their local newspaper and half didn’t and subsequently only a quarter of people brought their local newspaper from the shop. Furthermore, due to this, we feel that our newspaper will be free and delivered door to door so that it will be read by the target audience. Four people of the audience surveyed read the “red top” newspaper “The Sun”, two read quality tabloids such as “The Daily Mail” and three read “The Observer”. Subsequently, from these results, the content of our newspaper will need to be based on local current affairs that will lure both audiences into the content of the paper.
Between the audiences the interests vary from visiting the cinema, going to gigs and visiting restaurants and pubs. Just under half of the audience had children and 75% had pets. All of the local residents interviewed had internet and all but one of the participants had this through broadband. Through this we are able to channel our articles, advertisements and offers to lure the audience in to reading the content of the paper. Six out of ten of the residents surveyed also listened to the local radio, where the local newspaper could potentially be advertised. Health and beauty goods, clothes, magazines and DVD’s are the most popular personal possessions that the audience are buying. Furthermore, the knowledge of this will help what the articles and advertisements in our newspaper consist of and that, therefore, adhere to the requirements of the local residents who will be the audience of the new local newspaper.
In conclusion, we are able to distinguish that our target audience will be a variety of males and females, and our content of the newspaper will therefore reflect this - local sport content aimed primarily at the preferred reading of the males whereas the preferred readings of the local current affairs of human interest aimed at the women. The age ranges of the target audience vary from under 18 to over 60 and therefore the news content needs to reflect this and include current news stories that affect younger people, older people and those in between. The advertisements need to reflect the results of our survey and be items of interest of the audience to lure them into the paper. Furthermore this conveys to us that our survey has been successful as we are now much more aware, upon the production and design process of our new lcoal newspaper, of what we are to include as the content as who the stories are aimed at are a main function of this.
